The Rev. Dr. Michele R. Shields, BCC, is the Director of Spiritual Care at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, Emerita, and Research Scholar. She has been an Ordained Elder of the United Methodist Church since 1981. She is now a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
Michele holds a B.A. degree from McGill University in Montreal, a M.Div. degree from Boston University, and a D.Min. degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. She is a Certified Educator with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), a Board Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) and a former member of the ACPE Board of Directors Member. Michele served on the faculty of the University of San Francisco School of Medicine and the faculty of the UCSF School of Nursing, teaching about spirituality, cultural humility, ethics, and end-of-life care. She is also endorsed by the United Methodist Church to serve as a chaplain in general hospital and VA hospital settings. Michele served as a church minister for ten years and later served five hospitals as a Chaplain or Manager of CPE prior to UCSF. She is the author and co-author of numerous publications regarding Spiritual Care and her Spiritual Assessment and Intervention Model, which continues to be taught at UCSF.
